What is a doula? A postpartum doula?

The word "doula" comes from the Greek word meaning "woman's servant and has been come to refer to a woman who supports another woman before, during and/or after birth.

Postpartum doulas provide in home supportive care to the mother and her family during the first three months following birth.


How does a postpartum doula provide support?

A postpartum doula's goal is to nurture and assist the new mother and her family.  She does this by providing education, non-judgmental support on newborn feeding, soothing comfort and safety. Assisting with mother's postpartum recovery as well as aiding in sibling adjustment by fostering a restful environment for the new family. She may also help with meal planning, light cleaning and household organization including establishing new systems and synchronizing family schedules. She can also provide professional referrals as needed.



 Why should I hire a doula?

Research shows that women who have competent and helpful postpartum support enjoy greater breastfeeding success, greater self confidence and fewer cases of postpartum depression.
